How to create the Space Shooter game from scratch: a tutorial (part 1)

Start from scratch


1. From the Create Stuff menu, select Game
2. From the Create a New Game dialog, click …or start from scratch

First, you will need to add two actors to your game: a hero and an enemy. (In this game you’ll have lots of enemies, but they’ll all look alike).

The Actors area will be selected by default.

3. Type “spaceship” in the search area

4. Click on the Fighter Spaceship to add it to your game’s actor list- this will be the hero

5. Click on the Flying Saucer – this will be the enemy spacecraft

The two spaceships will now appear in the your game’s actors list, which is located near the top of your workspace.

Next you will need to place your actors in a scene.

6. Click on the Scenes tab. By default you will be editing the main scene of your game

Your actors list is on the left side of the screen. You should see the two spaceships that you previously added.

7. Click on Fighter Spaceship to add it to the scene by clicking on it in the actors list
8. Move the Fighter Spaceship so it is centered at the bottom of the scene
9. Add 15 Flying Saucers to the scene
10. Move the Flying Saucers so they are arranged as follows:

Now add a background to your game.

11. Click the Background button located to the right of the scene you just arranged.
12. Look through the list of backgrounds and click on one that you like. The Space background works nicely.

13. Click on the background that you want to select it
14. Click on the “x” in the top right corner of the dialog to exit the background chooser dialog

Next, add some music to your game.

15. Click on the Music button, located below the Background button
16. Browse or search for some music for your game. Rock III is used in the sample game
17. Click on the music that you want to select it
18. Click on the “x” in the top right corner of the dialog to exit the music chooser dialog

Now is a good time to save your work.

19. Click on the Save button located near the top right of your window
20. In the dialog that appears, give your game a memorable name
21. Click Save

You now have your actors arranged in your scene!
